Part 1 of How to Create the Life You Want talks about the biggest (and really the ONLY) barriers to having the life you want - your own fear and doubt. Here is the link to that article:
This article gives a “magic formula” to help you overcome your doubts and fears, and accomplish your dreams and goals. This really does work like magic; I and hundreds of thousands of people all over the world have applied this successfully in our lives.
The catch is to apply this in your life and work at it. Like exercise, it gets easier and stronger the more you do it. Very quickly, it becomes as easy as breathing.
This formula might appear to be TOO simple. You might not think anything so simple could be so powerful and life changing. But part of its power is in its very simplicity. It’s a fundamental principle of life, as you’ll see below.
I call this magic formula Engineering an Intended and Desired End Result.
Engineering an Intended and Desired End Result is the opposite of unintended consequences. We all know about unintended consequences. Everyone who has ever lived has had this happen at least once in their lives - we’ve taken an action intended to accomplish Result A, but unintentionally created Result B. Most of the time, unintended consequences are negative and undesirable.
Governments specialize in unintended consequences - no matter how good their intentions were at the beginning of every action taken.
Engineering an Intended and Desired End Result overcomes this problem, while giving you a powerful tool to get what you want and accomplish your goals.
This formula starts with defining the end result or outcome you want to create or have.
For our purposes, end results and outcomes are interchangeable. We will use “end result” instead of outcome, but both terms apply equally to this process.
An end result is defined as
an outcome of a series of actions or events
something created or produced from an action or set of actions
An environment or culture that is created or built
A goal obtained or accomplished
An end result is an actual thing, not a thought or an idea. Although, it is ideas that lead to the creation of end results. End results are the product of ideas. So it’s idea first, leading to an end result.
An end result should be one that is intended and desired. That’s the whole point - to create what you want (and not create what you don’t want).
We don’t want unintended results or consequences. We want to accomplish or produce or create exactly what we want - nothing more and nothing less.
Examples of desired end results:
You want to visit Prague and you do.
You want a happy family and you accomplish that.
You want to paint a landscape and you paint that exactly.
You want to lose 20 pounds and you do.
You have a problem with someone, and you want the outcome to be a win-win for both of you. You achieve that.
You want to write a book and you do.
You want your book published and it is.
You want to become a doctor/attorney/engineer or other professional and you become that.
You want your child to help out around the house, and he or she does chores well.
What is in common with successfully achieving all desired end results?
The individual first defined an exact end result he or she wanted, and worked to achieve that and nothing else. In other words, the individual had an exact end result in mind at the beginning and didn’t allow any distractions or barriers to get in the way.
Getting a clear picture of the desired end result in mind is to be done BEFORE any action is taken.
By defining the exact end result you want to occur, you focus your energies, imagination, intelligence and power to achieving that end result.
Let’s say you’re going to put together a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle.
What’s the very first step to take? Separate the pieces by color? Start with the corners and straight edges first?
No, the first step is to see the picture of the end result (look at the box cover).
This focuses your attention and even your intelligence, and enables you to put the puzzle together much faster.
A silly example? Not really. Creating the life you want starts with this simple and fundamental step.
Here’s another simple yet powerful example. You want to take a trip. To arrive where you want to arrive, you need to have two things clearly in mind: your starting point and your desired destination.
Without both of these, you never arrive where and when you want.
This might be as silly an example as the jigsaw puzzle, but the reality is that very, very, very few people have an exact, crystal clear destination in mind for their lives and/or each part of their live.
What is the exact end result you want for your career? Your family? Your materials possessions? Etc, etc, etc.
Most people have a vague idea of what they would like to have, or “to be happy.” Vague ideas or generalities don’t accomplish anything.
Not having an exact, clear goal or end result in mind for every part of your life is like being a rudderless ship - going where the currents and wind take you, and not where you intend to go.
This is the heart and soul of Engineering an Intended and Desired End Result.
Benefits and Power of Defining End Results First:
You get clear in your mind what you really want (this can be an eye-opening and valuable process)
You prevent time-wasting false starts and dead-ends.
Knowing the destination from the start enables you to map out the route to get there far more quickly and easily.
Without an intended and fully-defined end result or outcome in mind, one’s life will zigzag all over the place.
There is enormous power in goals - but the goals must be fully, exactly and well defined, and crystal clear in one’s mind.
One final analogy to drive home this incredibly simple yet powerful tool. Let’s say you want to cook a fancy, a gourmet meal. What is the very first step?
The first step is to have a clear picture in your mind or in a recipe book of what the final end result should look like. This is the most important step.
The desired meal is created ONLY IF THE END RESULT IS CLEARLY KNOWN AND INTENDED AT THE START.
This is true for all of life, and every part of life.
Engineering an Intended and Desired End Result or Outcome
The individual has a clear vision of the desired end result
All necessary ingredients are known and included
No unnecessary ingredients are added, and no distractions allowed
Each ingredient is handled properly
The entire process or “recipe” is known and understood
Each step is followed completely, with no shortcuts,
in the correct sequence, and
with everything then put together well to produce the intended outcome
If any doubts or fears pop up, simply focus on the end results you want to create. Acknowledge to yourself that you have doubts and fears, but don’t dwell on them or give them any further attention.
Keep pulling your attention off any distractions, doubts or fears, and place attention onto your desired end results. Like exercise, you will get stronger and stronger at this.
The first step to any project, job, parenting responsibility, conversation or problem resolution is to define the exact, intended and desired outcome or end result you want to create.
Taking the time and imagination to define what you really want to produce as an end result or outcome greatly speeds up the process of getting that thing done - and done very well and exactly as you intended
Keep the end result in mind as you do each action. Not only will this greatly speed up getting things done, it will also lead to much better and higher quality end results and outcomes.
And every action you take should lead toward a desirable and result that you actually want.
Part 3 will present powerful communication tools to resolve problems, create better and fulfilling relationships, and add to this process of engineering and creating the life you want.
